It's Not Just A Job...

I was watching TV with Bill last night when I saw the promotional trailer for "The New Adventures of Old Christine". This is the new sitcom headlined by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, better known as Seinfeld's Elaine Benes.

Anyway... based on the trailer, I think the show is going to suck. It just doesn’t seem funny, and it doesn’t look like there’s any chemistry among the cast members. If it does suck, this will be the second failed post-Seinfeld show for Louis-Dreyfus (the first one was Watching Ellie). It’s almost painful to watch how the Seinfeld alums go on one failed show after another.

It got me to thinking… Why does she do it? It’s not like she needs the money. Her father is Gerard Louis-Dreyfus, a New York-based Frenchman who is one of the richest men in the world. The last Forbes billionaire list puts his fortune at $3.4 billion.

So, unless Julia and her father are estranged, I would think that she can afford never to work a single day again. Or she can afford to do other things besides acting in unfunny sitcoms. Yet she keeps on acting.

Maybe it’s true that acting is a passion. She probably really loves her job. Lots of people do, I guess. Lots of people don’t just see their jobs as a means to an end (namely to get money to live on).

I’m not one of those people.
